3RD - 5TH GRADE
3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at HCL grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus, while also growing as readers, writers, mathematicians, and problem solvers! Check out our upper elementary offerings!
3rd Grade
HCL third graders love Jesus and love learning! Third graders learn to navigate their Bibles, sing hymns and songs in the classroom and worship, and journal truths, gratitude lists, and prayers. They also build confidence and independence as readers and writers, growing in their comprehension, fluency, stamina, and vocabulary and applying their skills through independent reading, cursive writing, typing, and independent projects. Third graders enjoy classic literature units, with Charlotte’s Web and Mr. Popper’s Penguins, along with diverse picture book read-alouds through our “Walk a Mile in Someone Else’s Shoes” 40 Book Challenge and March Madness Book Bracket. Third graders explore multiplication, division, fractions, and geometry through hands-on experiences through drawing and using manipulatives, projects, technology resources, and challenge activities. In addition, third graders discover engaging science and social studies topics, like animal adaptations, forces and motion, American history, geography, and the passage of time.

In 4th Grade, HCL students continue to learn and live out Bible memory work. The two classes combine weekly to discuss Biblical truths and Christian living. Students also start working on presentations and reports, as they build on their research skills, putting what they learn into their own words, and developing computer skills using programs like Google Slides. Fourth graders work on a variety of novel studies (like Save Me a Seat and Frindle), focusing on utilizing comprehension skills, accessing non-fiction texts and text features, and building reading stamina. They build on math skills through multi-digit multiplication, long division, geometrical figures, data through graphs, in addition to taking virtual field trips to destinations in the five regions of the United States for Social Studies and memorizing all states and capitals.

5th Grade
5th grade students at HCL grow in faith as they study God’s Word in class as well as through weekly small groups led by teachers and church staff. Students also read through assigned sections of the Bible with their families at home, and come together monthly in a student-led devotion and worship time for 5th graders and their parents. Fifth graders learn valuable lessons about responsibility and finances through our classroom economy system, which includes class jobs, paychecks, rent, and monthly auctions.
In Science, students use hands-on learning to explore a variety of topics including magnetism, electricity, force and motion, landforms, and living systems. Math is differentiated into three classes which cover the same content at different paces. Fifth graders study novels over the course of the year, including A Christmas Carol and Number the Stars as students practice analysis and response to texts across multiple genres. We use a writing program aligned with 6th-8th grade that will prepare students well for middle school and beyond. In Social Studies we study ancient civilizations with the foundation of God’s creation. Special classes include music, art, gym, science lab, and Spanish.
Our 5th graders also have the option to participate in athletics, including volleyball, basketball, golf, soccer, and track & field, as well as instrument lessons, band, and drama program.
