Full-Day Kindergarten

At Hales Corners Lutheran School, our Kindergarten teachers foster independence and help children to gain and use skills necessary for working in small groups as well as the class as a whole. Students learn how to function well as group members, how to ask for help and to be helpful, and how to complete a task. Each child is encouraged to move beyond his/her current level of understanding.

At the Kindergarten level, students will learn to read and write through instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics. Kindergarteners will learn a variety of math skills including counting, writing, and identifying numbers to 100, counting coins, telling time to the hour and half hour, and learn to add and subtract within 12. 1st Grade

1st graders at HCL grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus, while also growing as readers, writers, mathematicians, and problem solvers. Check out some of the great things happening in 1st grade at HCL!

Our HCL 1st graders love Jesus and love learning! Our first graders are given their first Bible. They learn to explore their bibles as they find stories that remind them that they are always loved. Weekly bibles verses are learned; they create a bible journal for recording bible verses and what each verse means to them. As first graders learn to read, we spend much time practicing sounds that letters make and why letters make those sounds. During the year, first graders build confidence as readers and writers as they explore concepts of print, genres, and different types of writing. Our first graders may come in writing simple sentences but leave writing short paragraphs. They are working on fluency, stamina, comprehension, and vocabulary. First graders enjoy learning about different authors throughout the year including Robert Munsch, Kevin Henkins, Mo Willems, Lisa Moser, and many others. They enjoy picture books and beginning chapter books. They participate in the K-5 March Madness Book Bracket. First graders explore math concepts through hands-on activities, games, and technology resources. The first graders learn about the world God created while exploring science activities, in both our science lab and the classroom, and learn about God’s people while discovering famous Americans and our Country during Social Studies.

2nd Grade

In 2nd Grade, our teachers continue to build faith and knowledge in our loving Savior, Jesus Christ. We have daily devotions and classroom worship, dig deep into our Bibles, attend weekly schoolwide Worship (Chapel) and continue to learn both Old and New Testament stories.

We are focused on the continued development of core reading, writing and math skills. We have daily small group time that is differentiated to meet the needs of different reading levels. Cursive writing is introduced and is a great skill for hand and eye coordination that also relates to reading development.  Second Grade students attend Science Lab twice per week.  Science and STREAM (Science, Religion, Engineering, Art and Math) Lab builds problem solving skills and collaborative learning. We have weekly Art lessons that correlate with our curriculum.

Special 2nd Grade Activities and Events:

  • Studying Washington D.C. and giving a classroom “tour” of D.C.

  • Christmas Service, 2nd graders have opportunities to lead as readers

  • Cross content connection with Social Studies and Reading as we discover how different countries celebrate Christmas Around the world

  • Author studies of Tomie DePaola and Marc Brown

  • Learn about historical schools and take a field trip to Whelan School House in Franklin to experience what school was like in the 1900’s

  • Top Dog/Brightest Bunny, children experience being the leader for the week, sharing about themselves, and emphasizing the gifts that God has given to them
